ARDS

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Many patients who develop ARDS need a ventilator to deliver oxygen to the lungs. A breathing tube (endotracheal tube) is placed in the patient's main airway (trachea) and connected to the ventilator.

Patients cannot talk while on a ventilator because the endotracheal tube passes between the vocal cords.
